By now you probably have already heard about this buzzword; TICAD. It stands for Tokyo International Conference on African Development. This year, Africa and specifically Kenya is lucky enough to host the conference.With four days to go, the TICADVI conference is expected to be one of the biggest conferences and highly profiled events in Kenya this year. According to their website, the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) Summit will be held at Kenyatta International Convention Center in Nairobi, Kenya on 27th -28th August 2016. Its main objective is to achieve a more strategic partnership with Japan government and therefore seeking to further Africa’s development. Here are the five major things you need to know.
1. The US Secretary of State John and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are among the 35 Heads of State expected to arrive in Kenya for the TICAD VI conference. The government, however, has not yet released the full list of the heads of states to attend the meeting.
2. The TICAD VI conference will address six key areas from the TICAD-V Yokohama Declaration and Action Plan: boosting economic growth; accelerating infrastructure and capacity development; empowering farms as mainstream economic actors; promoting sustainable and resilient growth; creating an inclusive society for growth; and consolidating peace, stability, democracy and good governance.
3.Traffic in Nairobi: The famous Kencom bus stop will be closed as it is in close proximity to the Summit’s venue. The Parliament Road, Taifa Road, City Hall Way will also be closed to give way and proper access for delegates to the conference in KICC Nairobi. Some parts of Harambee avenues will also be affected. Those driving themselves to the conference are urged to get accreditation from City hall to avoid being inconvenienced.
4. Nairobi will make history as this will be the first time TICAD conference is held in Africa since its inception in 1993. This verifies Nairobi as one of the best conferencing destination in Kenya and Africa as well.
5. The government estimates a direct cash injection of Sh12 billion into the economy from the Japan government. This will be a huge boost the country’s economy and therefore accelerating development.
